Phyllosticta spp. on Passiflora spp.

Nomenclature

The taxonomy is uncertain for Phyllosticta spp. occurring on the plant host Passiflora. None of the three species reported on Passiflora spp. were accepted in the most recent revision of the genus (van der Aa & Vanev 2002). Phyllosticta passifloramaculans Bat. was listed as a probable Phoma sp. but was not formally transferred. Phyllosticta passiflorae McAlpine and P. superficialis F. Stevens were excluded from Phyllosticta sensu stricto but their genus could not be determined. Van der Aa and Vanev were not able to examine any of the type specimens, therefore these judgements were based solely on the description from the protologue for each of the species.

P. superficialis was originally published as ‘superficiale’ but was subsequently corrected under Article 23.3 and Article 32.5 of the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature (St. Louis Code, 2000).

Plant Hosts and Geographic Distribution

P. passiflorae was initially collected on Passiflora edulis in Australia (McAlpine 1903). Both P. passifloramaculans and P. superficialis have been reported on Passiflora edulis in Brazil (Batista & Vital 1952, Mendes et al. 1998). In addition, P. superficialis was reported on Passiflora sexflora in Puerto Rico under the original spelling ‘superficiale’ (Stevenson 1975).

Phyllosticta sp. has been reported on Passiflora edulis in Brazil (Batista 1952, Mendes et al. 1998), on Passiflora foetida in India (Mathur 1979), and on a Passaflora sp. in Brazil (Mendes et al. 1998). The only record of Phyllosticta occurring on Passiflora spp. in the United States is for a Phyllosticta sp. in New Jersey on an ornamental Passiflora sp. (Anon. 1960, also cited in Horst 2002) and a Phyllosticta sp. in Florida on Passiflora edulis (Alfieri et al. 1984, 1994), both listed in plant host indices without supporting detail.
