Puccinia oenanthes-stoloniferae
Host Range and Geographic Distribution
Puccinia oenanthes-stoloniferae S. Ito ex Tranzschel 1939 has been reported from China, Japan, and Korea (Hiratsuka 1992), Pakistan (Ahmad 1956), Taiwan (Sawada 1943), and the USSR (Azbukina 1974).The host range is reportedly restricted to Oenanthe javanica subsp. javanica and Oenanthe javanica subsp. stolonifera (as Oenanthe stolonifera) of the Apiaceae (formerly Umbelliferae).It is autoecious, with all states being produced on the same host.Spermogonia and aecia occur on leaves, petioles, and stems, while uredinia and telia occur on leaves and petioles only (Hiratsuka 1992).
Nomenclature
The teleomorphic state of this rust was initially described and given the name Puccinia oenanthes T. Miyake 1906. It is sometimes erroneously cited as Puccinia oenanthes (Dietel) T. Miyake, but the citation of Dietel should not be included in the name because the anamorph Uredo oenanthes cannot serve as the basionym for the teleomorphic state (Art. 59.6). In the same year and in reference to the same rust on Oenanthe, Dietel proposed the name Puccinia oenanthes, promising to provide the description in a later publication. While the name Puccinia oenanthes Dietel 1906 sometimes appears in the literature (i.e., Hiratsuka 1992), this should be regarded as an invalid name, without description, and the name should be cited Puccinia oenanthes T. Miyake 1906.
Nevertheless, Puccinia oenanthes T. Miyake 1906 cannot serve as the accepted name for this rust, because it is an illegitimate later homonym of Puccinia oenanthes Carestia ex Bagnis 1876 (= Puccinia umbelliferarum, see nomenclature report below).Tranzschel listed S. Ito as the author, with the notation 'in sched.' (in schedula) when he published the name Puccinia oenanthes-stoloniferae in 1939.Ito printed the replacement name Puccinia oenanthes-stoloniferae on a herbarium sheet, but apparently did not validly publish the name (not seen).The accepted name for this rust is therefore Puccinia oenanthes-stoloniferae S. Ito ex Tranzschel 1939.

Notes: According to Saccardo (Syll. Fung. XX:640, 1911) Puccinia oenanthes Carestia ex Bagnis was a dubious species. It was also an illegitimate superfluous name; Bagnis (1876) validated Carestia's unpublished name by providing an illustration but listed the previously published Puccinia umbelliferarum DC 1815 as a synonym. Puccinia oenanthes T. Miyake 1906 is an illegitimate later homonym, and has been given the replacement name Puccinia oenanthes-stoloniferae S. Ito ex Tranzschel 1939. Puccinia umbelliferarum DC. is listed by Sydow (1910) as a partial synonym of Puccinia pimpinellae and also of Puccinia bullata (Pers.:Pers.) J. Schroet. (as Puccinia bullata Winter), considered by Hiratsuka (1992) to be a synonym of Puccinia angelicae. The name Puccinia umbelliferarum DC. has been applied to various rusts in the historical literature and its taxonomic status is in need of reevaluation.
