Wineberry Rubus rust-Hamaspora sinica var. sinica

This rust has a limited distribution in China and the Philippines but could be spread on the weedy species of Rubus. None of the Hamaspora rust fungi on Rubus appear to be very damaging.

Hamaspora sinica var. sinica F.L. Tai & C.C. Cheo, 1937

Uredinia hypophyllous, sparse, minute, yellow, paraphyses absent.

Urediospores globose, subglobose or ellipsoid, yellow, 20-30 × 15-28 µm, wall 1-2 µm thick, verrucose, without distinct germ pores.

Telia amphigenous hypophyllous, caespitose, filiform, spores aggregated into yellow fibrils, 3-20 mm long.

Teliospores obclavate to acicular, hyaline to yellowish, 2-5 septate, mostly 4-5 septate, 90-255 × 13-30 µm long, apical cell 5-38 × 2.5 µm.

See Tai & Cheo (1937) and Monoson (1969) for a more detailed description.

Host range: Rubus buergeri Miq., R. diclinis F. Muell., R. parkeri Hance, R. phoenicolasius Maxim. (Japanese wineberry), R. pinnatisepalus Hemsl., R. rolfei S. Vidal, R. trianthus Focke, and Rubus spp.

Geographic distribution: China (Tai, 1979), Hunan (Tai & Cheo, 1937); Philippines (Monoson, 1969)

Note: There is confusion among telial characteristics of H. acutissima, H. sinica, and H. taiwaniana all of which occur on Rubus spp. (Cummins,1950). While H. taiwaniana and H. sinica var. trisepta lacks uredinia, H. acutissima and H. sinica produce uredinia and telia on the same host. H. acutissima has teliospores with 2-3-septae while those of H. sinica have 3-4 septae.
