Red Miscanthus rust - Puccinia erythropus Puccinia erythropus Dietel 1905 Spermogonia subepidermal, mostly subglobose, 80-110 × 85-120 µm. Aecia aecidioid, surrounded by a well developed peridium; aeciospores formed in chains, mostly subglobose to broadly ellipsoid, 17-25 × 15-22 µm, walls 1 µm, uniformly verrucose, no germ pore. Uredinia on abaxial leaf surface, cinnamon-brown; urediniospores broadly ellipsoid to obovoid-ellipsoid, 24-35 × 18-23 µm, walls 2-3 µm thick at sides, usually 4-8 µm apically, cinnamon- or chestnut-brown, uniformly echinulate, 3-4 obscure, equatorial germ pores. Telia on abaxial surface, often confluent, early exposed, pulverulent, blackish brown; teliospores broadly ellipsoid, obovoid-ellipsoid or oblong-ellipsoid, rounded at both ends, moderately constricted at septum, 28-52 × 14-24 µm, walls 1.5-2.5 µm thick at sides, 3-8 µm apically, chestnut-brown; pedicels hyaline, thick-walled, not collapsing, to 80-140 µm long. See Hiratsuka et al. (1985) and Ono & Azbukina (1997) for more detailed descriptions. Host range: Spermatia and aecia recently discovered to be produced on Cynanchum sublanceolatum var. obtusum (Asclepiaceae) (Ono & Azbukina, 1997). Uredinal and telial stage known primarily on species of Miscanthus, namely M. floridulus, M. oligostachys, M. sinensis, M. sinensis var. condensatus, M. sinensis var. purpurescens, M. saccharifolius. Several reports exist of this rust on sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum) in tropical regions of China (Zhuang & Wei, 1999). Geographic distribution: Asia (China, Japan, New Caledonia, Philippines, Taiwan), Europe (Far Eastern Russia) References: Arthur, J.C., and Cummins, G.B. 1936.
